Why the wavelength matters

On darker skin, the machine is the whole story.

Melanin and the laser compete for the same light.

Laser targets pigment in the hair follicle. In deeper skin, the melanin in your skin can absorb that same energy. Shorter wavelength devices and IPL carry more of that risk on darker skin. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength passes more safely through melanin-rich skin to reach the follicle, which is why the evidence supports it for Fitzpatrick IV to VI.

IPL is not laser, and it is not for you.

A patch test before we commit to anything.

Every course starts with a £10 patch test and a Fitzpatrick assessment, deducted from your first course. We check how your skin responds before a full session. Any clinic that skips this on darker skin is a clinic to walk away from.

A triple-wavelength platform, set to your skin.

Our system is a triple-wavelength SmartDiode MD, 755nm, 808nm and 1064nm, MHRA and FDA cleared. For darker skin we treat on the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, the one the evidence supports for Fitzpatrick IV to VI. Your wavelength and your settings are chosen at patch test, never assumed. Laser delivered by Catia Zaki, VTCT Level 4, under the clinical supervision of Arman Zaki, a GMC-registered Physician Associate.

Why the wavelength decides your safety

Three wavelengths, one right answer for your skin.

755nm Alexandrite

Strong melanin absorption, efficient on fine light hair. Appropriate for Fitzpatrick I to III, not for deeply pigmented skin.

808nm Diode

The workhorse. Deeper than 755nm, effective across a broad range of hair, appropriate up to around Fitzpatrick IV with correct settings.

1064nm Nd:YAG

Melanin absorbs it far less, so more energy reaches the follicle and less is deposited in the skin. That is the safety margin for Fitzpatrick V and VI.

Razor bumps and ingrown hairs

The strongest case for men in this clinic.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae happens when curved hair re-enters the skin after shaving, provoking a chronic inflammatory response. In richly pigmented skin that inflammation drives pigmentation along the jaw and neck, and in some cases keloid formation. Laser addresses the mechanism rather than the symptom: fewer coarse follicles means fewer hairs able to re-enter the skin. For many men this is a genuine quality of life change, not a cosmetic one.

Honest about the result: this is long-lasting hair reduction, not permanent removal. Follicles dormant on the day of a session are unaffected, hormones can reactivate follicles later, and occasional maintenance is expected. Any clinic promising permanent removal is making a claim that cannot be substantiated, and we will not make it.

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?

No treatment is risk-free, and no clinic should claim it is. For Fitzpatrick IV to VI the evidence supports the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which is what we use, after a patch test and a Fitzpatrick assessment.

Why not IPL for dark skin?

IPL uses a broad spectrum of light that darker skin can absorb more readily, which raises the risk. A 1064nm Nd:YAG laser is the wavelength the evidence supports for deeper skin tones.

How many sessions will I need?

Hair grows in cycles and laser catches one phase at a time, so a course spaced over several weeks gives the best reduction. We set a realistic plan at your patch test.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a warm snap. We adjust the settings to your comfort and your skin.

Is the result permanent?

Laser gives long-term hair reduction rather than guaranteed permanent removal. Results vary between people. Treatments are for over 18s.
