Golden Pigmentation Duo
ESK Enlighten Gold + Ultimate A Gold · a full day and night pigmentation routine
Two ESK Gold steps for uneven-looking tone and dark marks, bought together: Enlighten Gold morning and night, Ultimate A Gold at night. Built on 4-n-butylresorcinol 0.3%, niacinamide 5% and retinal 0.1%, and suitable for all skin types, including deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick V to VI), introduced gradually. Both halves are Tatler Beauty Awards 2026 winners. Not for use in pregnancy.
- Enlighten Gold, morning and night: 4-n-butylresorcinol 0.3%, niacinamide 5% and gluconolactone 3%, the tone-evening step, with no hydroquinone.
- Ultimate A Gold at night: retinal 0.1%, niacinamide 5%, lactobionic acid 5% and 4-n-butylresorcinol 0.1%, for renewal, texture and the look of marks.
- Three actions in one routine: on how pigment is made, on how it moves up into surface cells, and on how quickly those cells turn over.
- Daily SPF is the fourth step, sold separately. Contains retinal: not for pregnancy, breastfeeding or trying to conceive.
£150.00 for the set · bought separately £160.00, saves £10.00
Two full sizes, 50ml each. Enlighten Gold runs twice a day; Ultimate A Gold a few nights a week while you build up, so it usually outlasts the first bottle and most people repurchase one, not two. Around 3 to 4 months of a complete routine.

Tatler Beauty Awards 2026 · Winner
Both halves of this duo, Enlighten Gold and Ultimate A Gold, were named winners at the Tatler Beauty Awards 2026 in the mature skin and pigmentation category. Tatler's entries are assessed by an editorial expert panel rather than voted for by the public. In ESK's 12 week clinic trial of 31 participants, using the two together gave a moderate or significant improvement in the appearance of hyperpigmentation for 88% of participants, brighter looking skin for 100% and texture for 94%. Figures are ESK's own, from the manufacturer's trial, and are reported as the appearance of skin rather than a medical outcome. Individual results vary.
- Good to know
- Ultimate A Gold (retinal) may transfer onto light-coloured fabrics; allow it to absorb fully before contact. Neither product contains fragrance or essential oils.
- Stockist
- Melatone Skin Clinic is an authorised ESK stockist. Genuine product with full traceability.
If your skin reacts, drop Ultimate A Gold to fewer nights and keep the barrier supported. If redness or stinging persists, pause it for a few days and message us. On deeper skin tones, irritation is itself a cause of dark marks, so a slower routine is a better routine.
Not sure if this is right for your skin? Message us on WhatsApp or book a skin assessment and we will confirm the right routine first.
What changes, honestly
Most people come to this because of one patch they have stopped photographing from that side. Surface marks often start looking less obvious around 4 to 6 weeks. Deeper pigment takes 2 to 3 months, and sometimes does not fully change, because pigment sitting in the dermis responds poorly to anything applied to the surface.
What we can say with confidence is that this is a routine built not to inflame skin that marks easily, and that there is someone to ask when it does not behave. Inflammation is itself a cause of post-inflammatory pigmentation, so the slow build-up is the point, not a disclaimer. Daily SPF is what protects whatever progress you make; without it the routine stalls.
If it is not doing anything by month three, we would rather reassess it with you than sell you a third bottle. Melasma, in particular, is hormonal and relapses with sun and heat, and deep pigment may need a peel, laser or a prescription rather than another cream. Message the clinic.

Why buy the duo rather than one product
Pigmentation routines work on more than one front at once. 4-n-butylresorcinol acts on tyrosinase, the enzyme that starts pigment production. Niacinamide is studied for slowing the transfer of that pigment up into surface skin cells. Retinal speeds how quickly those surface cells are replaced. One works on how pigment is made, one on how it moves up, and one on how quickly the surface turns over. That is the argument for running them together rather than one at a time, and the pair is £150.00 against £160.00 separately.
Morning: cleanse (Calming Cleanse), vitamin C if you use one (C Forte), Enlighten Gold, then Zinc Shade. Night: cleanse, Ultimate A Gold on the nights you use it, then Enlighten Gold over the top. Build Ultimate A Gold up over a month.
If you already own one of the two, buy the other on its own. If you want the full routine with cleanser, vitamin C, SPF and a PHA, the Pigmentation Kit is six full sizes for £356. If your skin is very sensitive, start with the Rosacea Kit and add Enlighten Gold once settled.
The detail
Ingredients, and what each one does
- 4-n-butylresorcinol, 0.3% (Enlighten Gold) and 0.1% (Ultimate A Gold)
- Works on tyrosinase, the enzyme in the pigment-forming pathway. ESK lists Enlighten Gold as suitable for all skin types, including deeper skin tones. Widely studied.
- Retinal (retinaldehyde), 0.1% (Ultimate A Gold)
- A form of vitamin A that needs one conversion step in the skin to become retinoic acid, where retinol needs two. Supports the look of smoother texture and a more even tone. The reason the set is not for use in pregnancy. Widely studied.
- Niacinamide, 5% (both)
- Supports the skin barrier and helps reduce water loss. Also studied for the look of uneven tone and for slowing pigment transfer. Widely studied.
- Gluconolactone (PHA), 3% (Enlighten Gold)
- A large-molecule acid giving gentle surface exfoliation with hydration. Gentler than an AHA of similar strength. Widely studied.
- Lactobionic acid, 5% (Ultimate A Gold)
- A polyhydroxy bionic acid used for hydration and gentle conditioning, which helps keep the skin comfortable alongside the retinal.
- Hyaluronic acid 1.6% and ceramides 0.06% (Ultimate A Gold)
- Humectant and barrier lipids that help the skin hold moisture while the retinal works.
Percentages as printed on the ESK packs and published by ESK. Full ingredient lists are on each product's own page. Descriptions are about the look and feel of skin, not a medical outcome.
How to use it
Morning
- Cleanse.
- Apply 1 to 2 pumps of Enlighten Gold to clean, dry skin.
- Finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every day.
Night
- Cleanse to remove SPF and the day, and let the skin dry fully.
- Apply 1 to 2 pumps of Ultimate A Gold on the nights you are using it. It also suits the décolletage, backs of hands and forearms.
- Follow with Enlighten Gold over the top, and a plain moisturiser if you feel you need it.
Building up Ultimate A Gold
Weeks 1 to 2: two nights a week. Weeks 3 to 4: every other night, if there is no lasting irritation. Week 5 onward: nightly, only if your skin is comfortable. Plenty of people stay at every other night and do well. Using it more often does not make it work faster if the barrier is struggling.
Order at night
Ultimate A Gold first, then Enlighten Gold over the top, following ESK's Enlighten Gold instructions. ESK's Ultimate A Gold page calls the retinal the final step; we have asked ESK to confirm. Either way, the retinal goes on first.
What to expect, and when
- 5 to 7 days
- Skin often feels smoother, from the PHA.
- 3 to 4 weeks
- Fine lines can look softer.
- 4 to 6 weeks
- Surface pigmentation may start to look less obvious.
- 2 to 3 months
- Deeper pigmentation, where it responds at all. These are ESK's own timings and a guide, not a promise. Pigment in the dermis often responds poorly to any topical, which is a reason to have it looked at rather than keep buying products. Message the clinic.
Is it right for my skin
- Dark marks after spots or irritation
- Yes. This is the core use.
- Uneven tone and sun-related marks
- Yes.
- Deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick V to VI)
- Yes, and 4-n-butylresorcinol is one of the reasons we reach for this pair. Build up slowly and keep inflammation down, because inflammation is what leaves marks.
- Melasma
- It can form part of a routine, but melasma is persistent, hormonally driven and relapses with sun and heat. Have it assessed rather than self-treating.
- Acne-prone skin
- Build the retinal up slowly and patch test first. Both retinal and niacinamide are common in routines for the look of post-blemish marks.
- Sensitive skin
- Usable, with a slower build-up. One night a week of Ultimate A Gold for the first fortnight is a reasonable start.
- Dry or oily skin
- Both suit it. Add a plain moisturiser over the top if the skin feels tight.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
- No. Ultimate A Gold contains a retinal.
Using it with what you already own
- Vitamin C
- Fine. Use it in the morning, before Enlighten Gold.
- Niacinamide, ceramides, hyaluronic acid
- Fine, and helpful.
- AHAs and BHAs
- Careful. Not on the same night as Ultimate A Gold; alternate them.
- Another retinoid
- No. One retinoid at a time.
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Careful. Keep them to different times of day.
- Scrubs
- No. There is enough exfoliation in this routine already.
- Peels, laser and in-clinic pigmentation treatments
- Yes, as the home routine around them, paused after each session for as long as your practitioner advises.
Questions we actually get asked
What is the Golden Pigmentation Duo?
ESK Enlighten Gold and Ultimate A Gold bought together as one routine, aimed at uneven-looking tone and dark marks. Both are full 50ml sizes, and both won at the Tatler Beauty Awards 2026.
What is in the set?
One Enlighten Gold, used morning and night, and one Ultimate A Gold, used at night only.
Why buy the pair instead of one?
They do different jobs and are meant to run together: one on how pigment is made, one on how quickly surface cells turn over. The pair is £150.00 against £160.00 separately, a £10.00 saving.
What is hyperpigmentation?
Patches or spots of skin that are darker than the surrounding skin, because more pigment (melanin) has been made or left behind there. The common causes are sun, inflammation after spots or irritation (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), and hormones (melasma). It is more common and more visible on deeper skin tones.
How do you get rid of dark spots on the face?
Honestly: you reduce the look of them, over months, with daily SPF, a tone-evening active, a retinal and patience. Nothing applied to the skin removes pigment sitting deep in the dermis. This duo is the tone-evening and retinal part; SPF is the part you add. For marks that do not change by month three, an assessment tells you whether a peel, laser or a prescription is the right next step.
How long do dark spots take to fade?
ESK's own guide for this routine is surface pigmentation looking less obvious in 4 to 6 weeks and deeper pigmentation in 2 to 3 months, where it responds at all. Marks left after spots on deeper skin tones commonly take months even with a good routine, and longer without SPF.
What is the difference between Enlighten Gold and Ultimate A Gold?
Enlighten Gold is a day and night moisturiser built on 4-n-butylresorcinol 0.3%, niacinamide 5% and a PHA. Ultimate A Gold is a night cream built on retinal 0.1% with niacinamide, lactobionic acid, 4-n-butylresorcinol and ceramides.
Is Enlighten Gold a morning product only?
No. It is used morning and night. Ultimate A Gold is the night-only step.
In what order do I use them at night?
Ultimate A Gold first, then Enlighten Gold over the top, following ESK's Enlighten Gold instructions. ESK's Ultimate A Gold page calls the retinal the final step and we have asked ESK to confirm; either way, the retinal goes on first.
How often should I use Ultimate A Gold?
Two nights a week for the first fortnight, every other night for weeks three and four, then nightly only if your skin is comfortable. Staying at every other night is perfectly reasonable.
Does retinol help with hyperpigmentation?
Vitamin A speeds the turnover of surface cells, which helps the look of marks, and retinal is the form in Ultimate A Gold: one conversion step from retinoic acid where retinol needs two. It works best paired with a tone-evening active and SPF, which is what this set is.
Does vitamin C help with hyperpigmentation?
Vitamin C is an antioxidant studied for the look of uneven tone and it supports SPF, so it is a good morning addition before Enlighten Gold. It is not in the set; C Forte or C Lite are the ESK options.
Do I have to wear SPF?
Yes, a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day. Ultraviolet drives pigment production, so without it the routine stalls. Zinc Shade is the ESK one.
Can I use it on deeper skin tones?
Yes. It is suitable for all skin types, including deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick V to VI). Build the retinal up slowly, because inflammation is itself a cause of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Will it help dark marks left after spots?
It is aimed at the look of post-inflammatory pigmentation, the marking left behind once a spot has healed. How much changes depends on how deep the pigment sits.
Does it help melasma?
It can be part of a routine, but melasma is persistent, hormonally driven and relapses with sun and heat. Have it assessed rather than self-treating; prescription options exist.
Does it contain hydroquinone?
No. The tone-evening actives are 4-n-butylresorcinol and niacinamide. Hydroquinone is prescription-only in the UK.
What is retinal, and how is it different from retinol?
Retinal, or retinaldehyde, is a form of vitamin A that needs one conversion step in the skin to reach retinoic acid. Retinol needs two. That makes retinal more direct while still being a cosmetic-strength ingredient rather than a prescription one. Individual tolerance still varies.
Can I use vitamin C with it?
Yes, in the morning, before Enlighten Gold.
Can I use exfoliating acids with it?
Not on the same night as Ultimate A Gold. Alternate them instead.
Can I use it with another retinoid?
No. One retinoid at a time.
Can I use it in pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. Ultimate A Gold contains a retinal, so do not use the set in pregnancy, breastfeeding or when trying to conceive. Enlighten Gold on its own has no retinal; ask your midwife or GP.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
Usually, with a slower build-up of Ultimate A Gold and a plain moisturiser over the top if needed. Neither product contains fragrance or essential oils.
My skin is dry and flaking. What should I do?
Reduce how often you use Ultimate A Gold and support the barrier. If it is not settling, pause it for a few days and restart more slowly.
Why does my pigmentation look darker at first?
Turnover speeds up and pigment can become more visible at the surface before it sheds. Daily SPF matters most during that phase.
How long does the set last?
Around 3 to 4 months of a day and night routine. Enlighten Gold usually runs out first, and can be bought on its own.
Should I patch test?
Yes. A small amount of each on the inner forearm or behind the ear, left 24 to 48 hours.
What is the difference between the duo and the Pigmentation Kit?
The duo is the two core actives for £150. The Pigmentation Kit adds Calming Cleanse, C Forte, Zinc Shade and Gentle Glow for a complete six-step routine at £356. Start with the duo if you already have a cleanser and SPF you trust.

Buying it from Melatone
Melatone Skin Clinic is an authorised ESK stockist. Stock is bought directly from ESK, so every item is genuine and traceable, and it is the same product we use in clinic in Battersea, London.
If you are not sure this is the right routine for your skin, do not guess at £150.00. Message us on WhatsApp or book a skin assessment first. If pigmentation is deeper than a topical can reach, we would rather tell you that than sell you a cream.
Delivery
Tracked UK delivery, £3.49 or free over £65. It usually arrives within 2 to 4 working days, with tracking by email. The price you see is the price you pay, with any delivery charge shown in full before checkout.
