That worry is not irrational. The wrong wavelength on deeper skin genuinely does cause pigmentation changes and burns, and it is why laser earned the reputation it has on Black and brown skin. We would rather say that plainly than tell you not to worry. Here is what we do about it.

Why wavelength matters
The right setting for your skin.
Laser hair removal works by delivering energy to melanin in the hair follicle. In lighter skin, most wavelengths perform similarly. In deeper skin, an ill-chosen wavelength can affect surface melanin as well, causing pigmentation changes and burns.
The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates deeper while being absorbed less by surface melanin. It is the widely used standard for treating darker skin types. The SMARTDiode platform carries all three wavelengths so your clinician can select the precise combination at your patch test, based on your skin assessment.

Eligibility. Open to existing Melatone clients aged 18 or over who have completed at least one paid treatment (patch test counts). Your referred friend must be a new client to Melatone with no prior treatment, consultation or patch-test booking.
How the £50 friend discount works. The £50 off applies to your friend’s first treatment booked at their patch test, on any single treatment, course, or bundle priced at £100 or more. The £10 patch test fee is separate and not discounted. Not redeemable on the patch test alone.
How your £50 credit works. £50 credit is added to your Melatone account within 7 days of your friend completing their first paid treatment (not just the patch test). Credit is non-transferable, cannot be exchanged for cash, and expires 12 months from issue. Applies to any treatment, course, bundle, or product over £100. One credit per successful referral, no cap on number of referrals.
Stacking. Referral discount cannot be combined with other promotional offers, package discounts already applied, or used to reduce the price below £100. Cannot be used in conjunction with model-day pricing.
Tracking. Tell us your friend’s name when they book their patch test, or have them mention you. Referrals not registered at the time of patch test cannot be honoured retrospectively.

Why seven
Hair grows in cycles. Laser only catches it in one.
Hair on the body cycles through three phases. Anagen is the active growth phase. Catagen is a short transition. Telogen is the resting phase. Laser is only effective on follicles in anagen, when melanin is present in the growing hair shaft and can absorb the wavelength.
At any given moment on a body region, typically 20 to 30 percent of follicles are in anagen. A single session catches one cohort. The follicles in catagen or telogen at that moment are not affected, and will continue their cycle.
Sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart catch each new cohort as it re-enters anagen. Over the course of 7 sessions, most follicles in the treated region pass through anagen at least once. Published reviews report around 85 to 95 percent reduction after a complete course in appropriately selected candidates. Individual results vary by skin type, hair type, hormonal factors, and the area treated.
More than 7 is rarely needed, except for hormonally driven hair (chin, jawline, lower abdomen). Fewer than 7 typically means hair returns within months. We discuss what to realistically expect for your skin at the patch test.

Alexandrite and Nd:YAG in deeper skin tones
A comparative study of long-pulsed Alexandrite and long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser in axillary hair removal across Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI found that both wavelengths may produce meaningful reduction with appropriate settings. The Nd:YAG arm showed a more favourable tolerability profile in darker skin types.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?
The SMARTDiode platform includes the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which is the established standard for treating deeper complexions safely, including Black and brown skin and afro or coarse hair. Your Fitzpatrick skin type is assessed at your patch test and wavelength settings are chosen accordingly. No laser is entirely without risk on any skin tone. If we assess that the treatment is not appropriate for you, we will tell you at the patch test.
Which areas can you treat on the face?
We treat upper lip, chin, sideburns, cheeks, jawline and front of neck, and full face. Facial hair on deeper skin tones needs carefully chosen settings, which is why the Fitzpatrick assessment and patch test always come first. Facial areas are usually shorter sessions than body areas and are often combined into a bundle.
How many sessions will I need?
Hair grows in cycles and laser is only effective on actively growing follicles. This is why a course of multiple sessions is needed rather than one treatment. Most clients see progressive reduction across 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Individual results vary depending on skin type, hair type, hormonal factors, and the area treated.
Do I need a patch test first?
Yes. A patch test is required before your first session. It takes around 20 minutes and includes a full skin assessment, device test patch, and treatment plan discussion. The £10 patch test fee is deducted from your course cost. Book via Treatwell. How much does laser hair removal cost?
Pricing is per area and per course. A course of 7 works out from £30 a session for a smaller area such as upper lip or chin, and full pricing for every area is listed on this page. Every course begins with a £10 patch test, which is deducted from your course cost. Payment plans are available on courses.
Who delivers the treatment?
Catia Zaki, our Laser Lead, delivers all laser hair removal at Melatone. She holds VTCT Level 4 in laser and light therapies and works under the clinical supervision of Arman Zaki, our founder and a GMC-registered Physician Associate.
Is there any downtime?
Most clients experience mild redness and warmth in the treated area for a few hours after treatment. This typically settles by the next day. More sensitive skin types may experience more noticeable temporary redness. Sunscreen on treated areas is essential after each session.
Does laser hair removal work on dark skin with dark hair?
Dark hair is what makes laser work. The laser targets melanin in the hair follicle, so the more pigment the hair carries, the better the target. Dark skin is a separate question, because skin holds melanin too, and the wavelength has to reach the follicle without over-treating the surface. That is why we lead with 1064nm Nd:YAG, which travels deeper and is absorbed by surface pigment far less than shorter wavelengths. Dark skin with dark hair is the combination that wavelength exists for. Grey, white, blonde and red hair carry little or no melanin, so laser is far less effective on those whatever the skin tone. Your own combination is assessed at the £10 patch test, which comes off the cost of your course.
Can laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs and razor bumps?
Often, yes. Because laser reduces the hair that drives the problem, it is widely used to ease ingrown hairs and razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae), which affect afro and coarse hair disproportionately. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength lets us treat these on darker and Black skin. We assess suitability at your patch test. Read more on our ingrown hairs and razor bumps page. Individual results vary.
Is there anything that would stop me having laser hair removal?
A few things, which is why we screen at the patch test. We do not treat during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Some medications, including certain antibiotics and acne treatments such as isotretinoin, make skin more sensitive to light, so we would ask you to check with your prescriber. Recent sun exposure, fake tan, and very recent waxing or plucking also affect when we can start. Tell us what you are taking at the patch test and we will plan around it.
Is it suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. Laser hair removal is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We will wait until you have finished breastfeeding before starting or resuming a course.
