Beard and neck
Razor bumps start with the hair, so that is what we treat.
Razor bumps, or pseudofolliculitis barbae, happen when tightly curled or coarse hair is cut sharp and then curls back into the skin as it grows, setting off inflammation around the follicle. On brown and black skin that inflammation also leaves post-inflammatory dark marks, and repeated bumps in the same place can scar. Shaving closer makes it worse; shaving less often helps, but few men can stop shaving.
Laser reduces the hair that does the curling. Over a course of 7 there is less hair on the neck and jawline to become ingrown, so there are fewer new bumps and less new pigment. It does not remove the marks or scars already there; those are assessed separately, and we say so honestly at consultation. You choose the map. Some men want the whole beard reduced, most want the neck and cheek lines cleaned up and a defined beard edge left alone. The area is agreed at consultation and marked before each session.
Back, shoulders and body
Hormone-driven hair needs honest expectations.
Back, shoulder and chest hair is driven by androgens, which is why it thickens through the twenties and thirties. Laser gives long-lasting hair reduction over a course, and men usually see the biggest change in density and coarseness by the middle of the course. Because the hormonal drive continues, some men need an occasional maintenance session later. We tell you that before you start, not after.
Laser works on dark, pigmented hair and poorly on fair, grey or red hair, whatever your skin tone. If a good share of the hair in an area has already gone grey, we will say so at the patch test rather than sell you a course that cannot deliver.
Men with darker skin
1064nm supports darker skin.
On dark, brown and black skin the wrong laser targets the pigment in your skin as well as the hair, and that is what causes burns and dark marks. The longer 1064nm wavelength reaches the follicle while sparing more of the surface melanin, which is why it is the wavelength we use on Fitzpatrick IV to VI. IPL is not used on darker skin at Melatone. Coarse, dark beard and body hair is exactly the hair 1064nm is suited to. Our full explanation is on the laser for dark skin page.

Eligibility. Open to existing Melatone clients aged 18 or over who have completed at least one paid treatment (patch test counts). Your referred friend must be a new client to Melatone with no prior treatment, consultation or patch-test booking.
How the £50 friend discount works. The £50 off applies to your friend’s first treatment booked at their patch test, on any non-prescription single treatment, course or bundle priced at £100 or more. Prescription-only treatments are excluded by law. The discount does not apply to the £10 patch test and cannot be redeemed on the patch test alone. As for every new client, the £10 comes off your friend’s course if they book one.
How your £50 credit works. £50 credit is added to your Melatone account within 7 days of your friend completing their first paid treatment (not just the patch test). Credit is non-transferable, cannot be exchanged for cash, and expires 12 months from issue. Applies to any non-prescription treatment, course, bundle or product over £100; it cannot be used towards any treatment that requires a prescription. One credit per successful referral, no cap on number of referrals.
Stacking. The referral discount cannot be combined with other promotional offers or model-day pricing. It can be used on a course or bundle at its published price, which must be £100 or more before the discount is taken off.
Tracking. Tell us your friend’s name when they book their patch test, or have them mention you. Referrals not registered at the time of patch test cannot be honoured retrospectively.
Changes. Melatone reserves the right to modify or end the programme at any time. Credits already issued will be honoured. Clinic at sole discretion in cases of suspected abuse.
Privacy. Personal data shared as part of a referral is processed under Melatone’s privacy policy. We do not share your details with the referred party beyond confirming the referral.

Fitzpatrick skin typing, a look at the hair in the area, the map you want treated, and a small test area at the settings we intend to use, at least 48 hours before your first full session. Assessment is led by Arman Zaki, GMC-registered Physician Associate.
02 · Before each session
Shave, do not wax.
Shave the area 24 hours before. No waxing, plucking, threading or hair removal cream for 4 weeks beforehand, because the laser needs the hair in the follicle. No fresh tan or sunbeds on the area.
03 · The course
Seven sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Laser is delivered by Catia Zaki, VTCT Level 4 laser practitioner, under clinical oversight. A beard and neck session takes about an hour, a full back about an hour, full body about an hour and three quarters. Contact cooling runs throughout. Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks.

Photographs, not promises.
We track density and coarseness with photographs at consistent lighting, adjust settings conservatively, and tell you honestly if an area needs maintenance later. Daily SPF on treated facial skin is part of the plan.

Does laser hair removal help razor bumps and ingrown hairs on the beard?
Often, yes. Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae) happen when curly or coarse hair curls back into the skin after shaving and sets off inflammation, which on darker skin also leaves dark marks. Laser reduces the hair that is doing the curling, so over a course there is less hair to become ingrown and fewer new bumps. Can I keep a beard line and only treat the neck?
Yes. Tell us whether you want the whole beard reduced or only the neck and cheek lines cleaned up. The treatment map is agreed at consultation and marked before each session, so a defined beard edge can be left untouched while the areas that give you razor bumps are treated.
Does it hurt, and can I shave between sessions?
Most men describe a hot flick against the skin. Contact cooling runs throughout the session and the patch test tells us how your skin and your tolerance respond before the first full treatment. Shave the area 24 hours before each session and keep shaving between sessions if you want to. Do I need a patch test first?
Yes, always. The £10 patch test is a small test area at the settings we intend to use, at least 48 hours before your first full session, with a consultation and skin assessment on the same visit. It is deducted from the cost of your course. Book it online or by WhatsApp.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
It gives long-term hair reduction rather than guaranteed permanent removal. Treated hair grows back finer and sparser over the course. Because back, shoulder and chest hair is driven by hormones, some men need an occasional maintenance session later, and we tell you that before you start.
How long between sessions?
Four to six weeks. Laser only affects hair in its active growth phase, so the spacing is set to catch each cycle. Coarser, denser male hair does not change the spacing, only the number of sessions that may be needed.
Does laser hair removal cause cancer?
No. The laser uses light, not ionising radiation, and is absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle a few millimetres down. There is no evidence that laser hair removal causes cancer. On the wrong settings it can burn or mark the skin, which is why we patch test and choose the wavelength for your skin type.
