Why the laser matters

Dark skin needs a laser that spares your pigment.

Laser hair removal works by aiming light at the pigment (melanin) inside the hair, heating the follicle enough to slow or stop it regrowing. The difficulty in melanin-rich skin is simple: there is pigment in your skin as well as in your hair. A laser that cannot tell the two apart heats the skin too, and that is what leads to burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark marks that are hardest to clear in brown and black skin.

The answer is wavelength. The longer 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength passes more safely through the surface and reaches the follicle while sparing more of the melanin in your skin. That is why, across dermatology, it is considered the wavelength of choice for Fitzpatrick IV to VI. Shorter wavelengths and IPL, which are common on the high street, carry a higher risk on darker skin and are generally avoided for exactly this reason.

Coarse, dark hair is common across South Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, East Asian and African-Caribbean backgrounds, and it is exactly the hair the 1064nm wavelength is suited to.

We assess you on your skin, your hair and your history, never on your background. If you have been turned away elsewhere, told your skin is "too dark for laser", or left with marks from IPL, that is usually a wavelength and settings problem, not a reason laser cannot work for you. Assessment and an honest plan.

Fitzpatrick typing, a full history, the areas that bother you, and a realistic reading of how many sessions this is likely to take for your hair and skin. Consultation and clinical assessment are led by Arman Zaki, founder and Lead Clinician, a GMC-registered Physician Associate.

02 · Patch test

Always before the first full session.

A small test area at your intended 1064nm settings, 24 to 48 hours ahead, so we can confirm your skin tolerates the treatment before a full course. This matters most in darker skin, where it lowers the risk of an avoidable reaction. The patch test is deducted from the cost of your course.

03 · The course

Sessions spaced across weeks.

Laser is delivered by Catia Zaki, VTCT Level 4 laser practitioner, under clinical oversight, using 1064nm for darker skin. Because laser only affects hair in its active growth phase, results build over a course of sessions rather than in one. We track progress with photographs at consistent lighting.

04 · Review

We watch your skin, not just your hair.

Through the course we review how your skin is responding, adjust settings conservatively, and catch any pigment change early. Occasional maintenance may be needed later. Aftercare and sun protection are part of the plan, because protecting melanin-rich skin is how the result stays clean.

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?

It can be, with the right laser and settings. The concern in melanin-rich skin is that some lasers target pigment in the skin as well as the hair, which raises the risk of burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The longer 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength reaches the hair follicle while sparing more of the surface pigment, which is why it is generally preferred for Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin. We confirm your Fitzpatrick type, take a full history, and carry out a patch test 24 to 48 hours before your first full session. No treatment is entirely without risk, and honest expectation-setting is part of how we work.

Which laser is best for dark, brown or black skin?

For darker skin tones, a long-pulsed 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is generally considered the gold standard because it penetrates to the follicle while sparing surface melanin. Our diode platform, SmartDiode MD, delivers 755nm, 808nm and 1064nm, and for Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin we use the 1064nm wavelength. IPL and aggressive short-wavelength pigment settings are generally avoided on darker skin because they carry a higher risk of burns and pigment change. A patch test always comes first. Can you have laser hair removal on Fitzpatrick VI (very dark) skin?

Yes, laser hair removal is suitable for all skin types, including Fitzpatrick V to VI, when the right wavelength and settings are used. For the deepest skin tones the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength supports darker skin by targeting the hair rather than the surrounding pigment. Careful assessment, conservative starting settings and a patch test matter most in these skin types, which is exactly how we approach it. Laser works best on dark, coarse, pigmented hair and is less effective on very fair, grey or red hair.

Does laser hair removal cause hyperpigmentation on dark skin?

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the main risk to manage in melanin-rich skin, and it is usually the result of the wrong wavelength, settings that are too aggressive, or treating recently tanned skin. Using 1064nm at appropriate settings, patch testing first, avoiding treatment over a fresh tan, and giving clear aftercare all lower that risk. If any pigment change does occur it is usually temporary and settles, and we review you through the course to catch and manage it early. This is why we do not treat darker skin with IPL or aggressive short wavelengths.

Is laser hair removal good for Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern or African-Caribbean skin?

Yes. Brown and black skin across South Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, East Asian and African-Caribbean backgrounds is exactly the skin the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is suited to, because it lets us treat the coarse, dark hair common in these groups while protecting the surrounding pigment. We assess each person on their skin, hair and history rather than on their background, and we set the wavelength and settings to the skin in front of us. A consultation and patch test come before any course.

Most people need a course of sessions spaced several weeks apart, because laser only affects hair that is in its active growth phase, and the number varies with the area, your hair and your skin.
