Suitability

What hair types respond best to laser?

Laser works by targeting melanin, the pigment in the hair. The more pigment the hair carries, the better the target, which is why dark, coarse hair generally responds best of all.

This is worth saying plainly, because it is the part most clinics leave out: grey, white, blonde and red hair carry little or no melanin, and laser is far less effective on them whatever your skin tone. If that is your hair, we would rather tell you at a £10 patch test than sell you a course.

Skin tone is a separate question. It decides which wavelength we use, not whether laser will work on your hair.

Hair colour

The single biggest factor in how well laser responds.

Hair thickness

Coarse hair absorbs more energy than fine, vellus hair.

Density and area

Affects session length, and how many sessions you are likely to need.

Growth cycle

Laser only affects hair in its active phase, which is why courses are spaced.

Your skin

A wide range of skin tones and types.

Your skin is individual, so your settings should be too. We treat a wide range of skin tones and types, with parameters chosen at assessment rather than assumed from a chart.

Our clinical team also has a special interest in Skin of Colour. Deeper skin holds more melanin, which changes which wavelength reaches the follicle safely, and it is an area where people are too often turned away or treated on the wrong device. We lead with 1064nm Nd:YAG on a three-wavelength SMARTDiode platform, and 1064nm supports darker skin.

If that is what brought you here, there is a fuller explanation on our laser hair removal for Skin of Colour page, including Fitzpatrick assessment, wavelength choice and what we check before treating.

Beyond hair

More than unwanted hair.

Ingrown hairs

Reducing the hair reduces what causes them. Widely used for pseudofolliculitis barbae, which affects afro and coarse hair disproportionately.

Razor bumps and irritation

For many people the daily shave, not the hair itself, is the actual problem.

The marks left behind

Reducing recurrent irritation can help the skin settle. Laser is not a treatment for every kind of pigmentation, and we will not pretend otherwise.

We assess suitability at your patch test. Read more on our ingrown hairs and razor bumps page. Individual results vary.

Your journey

What happens, in order.

01

Patch test, £10

A 20-minute appointment. Fitzpatrick skin assessment, a test patch at real settings, and a plan. The £10 comes off your course.

02

Your settings

Wavelength and parameters chosen for your skin and hair, then reviewed at every visit rather than set once.

03

A course, not a session

Sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart, working with the hair growth cycle. Most people see progressive reduction across a course.

04

Honest assessment

If laser is not right for your hair or your skin, we will say so at the patch test. Individual results vary.

London

A London clinic, based in Battersea.

Before and after

How to get the most from a course.

Before your session

  • Shave the area, do not wax or pluck. Laser needs the follicle intact and the hair below the surface. Waxing, threading and plucking remove the target.
  • Come without fake tan. It changes how the skin reads and how we set the device.
  • Avoid deliberate sun exposure and sunbeds in the run-up. Recent tanning affects settings.
  • Tell us what has changed. New medication, pregnancy, a recent treatment on the area.

Afterwards

  • Mild redness and warmth for a few hours is usual, and usually settles by the next day.
  • Sunscreen on treated areas is not optional, and it matters more on deeper skin tones where post-inflammatory pigmentation is a genuine risk.
  • Shedding over the following one to three weeks can look like regrowth. It is the treated hair leaving.
  • Keep to the spacing we set. Sessions too close together do not speed anything up, because the hair has to re-enter its active phase.

Straight answers

What would stop us treating you.

We would rather turn a course down than take money for something that will not work or is not appropriate. This is what we screen for at the patch test.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

We do not treat during pregnancy. It is a precaution rather than a known harm, and we hold to it.

Light hair

Grey, white, blonde and red hair carries little melanin. Laser has very little to target, whatever your skin tone.

Recent tanning

Fresh sun, sunbeds or fake tan change how the skin responds. We reschedule rather than guess.

Some medications

Certain drugs increase light sensitivity, and some recent oral acne treatments need a gap. Bring your list.

Active skin conditions

Infection, broken skin or an active flare in the treatment area. We treat when the skin has settled.

An unclear patch test

If the test patch does not respond the way we want, we say so. No laser is entirely without risk on any skin tone.

Who treats you

One practitioner, every session.

Laser at Melatone is delivered by Catia Zaki, VTCT Level 4 in Laser and Light Treatments, working to protocols set with our Lead Clinician, Arman Zaki, who is a GMC-registered Physician Associate.

It is the same person at your patch test and at every session of your course, which is why settings get reviewed each visit rather than set once and repeated. The clinic holds a Special Treatments Licence and works with a registered Laser Protection Adviser.

Honest answers

Questions people actually ask.

Does Melatone offer laser hair removal in London?

+

Yes. We provide laser hair removal in London from our clinic on Lavender Hill in Battersea, SW11, five minutes from Clapham Junction.

Which skin tones can you treat?

+

A wide range of skin tones and types, subject to individual clinical assessment and treatment suitability. Our SMARTDiode platform carries three wavelengths, and 1064nm Nd:YAG supports darker skin. Suitability is decided at your patch test rather than assumed.

Which hair types respond best?

+

Laser targets melanin in the hair, so darker and coarser hair generally responds best. Grey, white, blonde and red hair carry little or no melanin and respond far less well, whatever the skin tone.

Is laser hair removal suitable for everyone?

+

Not necessarily. Suitability depends on your skin, your hair, the area being treated, your medical history and the protocol used. That is what the patch test is for, and we will tell you if it is not right for you.

Which areas can be treated?

+

Face, underarms, arms, bikini, Brazilian, Hollywood, legs, back, chest, abdomen and full body. Areas can be combined into a course.

How many sessions will I need?

+

Hair grows in cycles and laser only affects hair in its active phase, which is why we work in courses rather than single sessions. Your plan is set at the patch test.
