Spot patches, honestly

Most people who reach for them can feel a spot coming, or have one that has just surfaced, and want it gone before it peaks. That is exactly where a microneedle patch works: the needles carry salicylic acid and niacinamide into the top layers of the skin, where a leave-on cream cannot get in the same amount, and the patch itself keeps fingers off.

What they will not do is treat acne. A patch handles one spot at a time; it does nothing for the next one. If you break out regularly, the answer is a routine (Hydroxy Cleanser, B Calm, a retinal such as Ultimate A+) and, for persistent or scarring acne, a GP, because prescription options exist. ESK is also clear that patches are generally not effective on large cystic or blind spots.

On deeper skin tones, the reason to use a patch early is the mark, not the spot. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation follows almost every picked or long-lived spot on skin of colour and can take months to fade. Treating early and not touching is most of the prevention.

Ingredients, and what each one does

Sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid): The needles themselves. Hyaluronic acid is solid when dry and dissolves on contact with the moisture in the skin, releasing what is in the tips and hydrating as it goes.
Salicylic acid (BHA): An oil-soluble acid that gets into pores and loosens the plug of dead cells and oil. The standard ingredient for congestion. Widely studied.
Niacinamide (vitamin B3): Supports the skin barrier and is studied for the look of redness and the marks a spot leaves. Widely studied.
Tea tree leaf oil: A plant oil traditionally used for breakout-prone skin. It is an essential oil; patch test if you react to them.
Green tea extract, ferulic acid, resveratrol: Antioxidants included in the formula.
Oligopeptide-10: A peptide included in formulas for breakout-prone skin.

How to use it

Applying a patch

Wash and dry your hands. Cleanse the skin and pat it thoroughly dry: moisture dissolves the needles early.
Take the patch out of its case and peel off the plastic backing without touching the microneedles.
Press the patch onto the spot and hold for a few seconds so the needles seat.
Leave on for 8 hours, then peel off and discard. Single use.

When to apply

As soon as you can feel or see a spot forming. ESK: patches work best on early to mid-stage spots. Day or night; overnight is easiest.

What not to patch

Large, hot, deep or cystic spots, broken skin, or a spot that is spreading. Those need leaving alone, and a GP or pharmacist if they are getting worse.

Afterwards

Do not squeeze. Cleanse as normal, and keep SPF on the area while it heals to limit the mark.

What to expect, and when

On application: A brief pinprick feeling as the 0.3mm needles seat, then nothing. The patch is near-invisible.
After 8 hours: The needles have dissolved; the patch peels off. A spot caught early is usually smaller, flatter and less red.
Next day: Most early spots settle within a day or two. A second patch can be used if needed.
If nothing changed: The spot was probably too deep. Patches do not reach cystic or blind spots. Message us about a routine, or see your GP for persistent acne.

How do microneedle spot patches work?

The needles are made of solid hyaluronic acid with the actives in the tips. Pressed into the skin, they dissolve in its moisture, releasing salicylic acid and niacinamide inside the top layers rather than on the surface, where a cream would sit. The patch also stops you touching the spot.

Do microneedle patches hurt?

No. A brief pinprick sensation as the 0.3mm needles seat is normal; after that you will not feel the patch.

What kind of spots do they work on?

Do they work on cystic acne?

How long do I leave a patch on?

Can I wear them during the day?

Yes. ESK: they can be worn whenever needed. They are near-invisible without make-up over them.

Are they better than hydrocolloid pimple patches?

They do a different job. A hydrocolloid patch absorbs fluid from a spot that has already come to a head. A microneedle patch delivers actives into a spot that is still forming. Use hydrocolloid on a whitehead; use Spotless on a spot you can feel coming.

Can I reuse a patch?

No. The needles dissolve on use. Each patch is single use.

Why must my skin be completely dry?

The needles are hyaluronic acid, which dissolves in moisture. Any water or serum on the skin dissolves them before they can seat, and the patch will not work.

Can I use them with my acne routine?

Yes. Cleanse, dry, patch the spot, and use your usual serum and moisturiser on the rest of the face. Keep retinal and acids off the patched spot.

Are they suitable for deeper skin tones?

Yes. They are suitable for all skin types, including deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick V to VI). On deeper skin, treating a spot early and not picking is the main way to avoid the dark mark it leaves.

Will they help the dark mark a spot leaves?

They help by shortening the spot and stopping picking. For the mark itself, daily SPF and, on deeper skin, Enlighten Gold for the look of dark marks.

Are they suitable for teenagers?

Yes. ESK: suitable for all ages.

Can I use them in pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There is no retinal in this patch. Salicylic acid at the scale of a single spot patch is widely regarded as suitable; ask your midwife, GP or pharmacist if unsure.
