Ultimate A

ESK Ultimate A · a retinal 0.06% night cream with niacinamide, the gentle start

The gentle way into vitamin A. A night cream with retinal 0.06%, a form of vitamin A one step from the active form, and niacinamide 4% to support the barrier, at pH 4.5 to 5.0. Made for sensitive, rosacea-prone and first-time retinoid skin, and suitable for all skin types, including deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick V to VI).

  • Retinal 0.06% for the look of smoother texture, fine lines and a brighter, more even tone, at a strength built for reactive skin.
  • Niacinamide 4% supports the skin barrier, so it is the ESK retinal for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.
  • It is also your night moisturiser. The last step at night; non-comedogenic, no essential oils.
  • Do not use in pregnancy, breastfeeding or when trying to conceive. Start a few nights a week; retinal is yellow and can mark light fabrics.

Clinic rating on Google: 5.0
Good to know
Retinal is naturally yellow and may transfer onto light fabrics; let it absorb fully first. No essential oils in the ingredient list.
Stockist
Melatone Skin Clinic is an authorised ESK stockist. Genuine product with full traceability.

If your skin reacts, drop to fewer nights and keep the barrier supported with a moisturiser such as Repair + underneath. A few days of dryness while you build up is common; lasting stinging or redness is a sign to pause it and message us.

Not sure if this is right for your skin? Message us on WhatsApp or book a skin assessment and we will confirm the right routine first.

A first retinal, honestly

Most people who reach for it have tried a retinoid before and been put off by peeling, or have skin that reacts to most things and have never dared. This is the ESK retinal built for that: a lower strength, a barrier-supporting base, and no essential oils, so the vitamin A does its work over months without a fight.

What changes, and when: skin feels smoother first, the look of fine lines and tone follows over 8 to 12 weeks, and the pay-off keeps building with steady use. A lower strength means a gentler ramp, not a weaker result over time; consistency beats strength.

On deeper skin tones, irritation is itself a cause of dark marks, which is why the gentlest retinal is often the right first retinal there. If you get on well and want more, Ultimate A Gold is the step up; for oily, congested skin, Ultimate A+.

Where it fits in a night routine

Night: cleanse with Calming Cleanse, then Ultimate A as the last step. Dry or reactive skin can put Repair + on first and Ultimate A over it.

Morning: cleanse, B Quenched or Repair + as your moisturiser, then SPF such as Zinc Shade. SPF matters more, not less, while you use a retinoid.

Ready for more after a few months? Ultimate A Gold is the step up for most skin; Ultimate A+ for oily, congested skin. Which vitamin A is which: retinal vs retinol.

The detail

Ingredients, and what each one does
Retinal (retinaldehyde), 0.06%
A form of vitamin A that needs one conversion step in the skin to become retinoic acid, where retinol needs two. Supports the look of smoother texture, fine lines and a more even tone. At 0.06% it is ESK's entry strength. Widely studied.
Niacinamide (vitamin B3), 4%
Supports the skin barrier and helps reduce water loss, which helps keep the skin comfortable alongside a retinal. Widely studied.
Macadamia and sweet almond oils, glycerin, hyaluronic acid
Emollients and humectants that keep the cream comfortable on dry and reactive skin.
Glycolic acid (trace)
Present low in the ingredient list, well below the level in Ultimate A+. ESK does not publish a percentage.
Vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate)
An antioxidant included in the formula.

Retinal 0.06% and niacinamide 4% as printed on the ESK pack; pH 4.5 to 5.0 as published by ESK. Descriptions are about the look and feel of skin, not a medical outcome.

Full ingredients (INCI): Water (Aqua), Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Niacinamide, Sucrose Distearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sucrose Stearate, Ethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Dehydroacetic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Retinal, Glycolic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Hyaluronate.

How to use it

Night

  1. Cleanse and pat dry.
  2. Apply any serum or, for dry skin, a moisturiser, and let it settle.
  3. Put 1 to 2 pumps of Ultimate A on your fingertips and apply to the face as the last step.
  4. Let it absorb before your head touches the pillow: retinal is yellow.

Building up

Weeks 1 to 2: every third night. Weeks 3 to 4: every other night. Then nightly if your skin is comfortable. Reactive skin can stay at every other night for as long as it likes; consistency matters more than frequency.

Beyond the face

It can also be used on the décolletage, the backs of the hands and the forearms.

Morning

Broad-spectrum SPF every day. A retinoid makes daily sun protection essential.

What to expect, and when
First 2 weeks
Skin feels a little smoother. Mild dryness while you build up is common.
4 to 6 weeks
The earliest point to judge brightness and texture.
8 to 12 weeks
The point to judge the look of fine lines and tone.
3 to 6 months
Results keep building with steady use. If nothing has changed by month three, reassess with us rather than buying another bottle. Message the clinic.
Is it right for my skin
Sensitive and rosacea-prone skin
Yes. This is the ESK retinal for it. Patch test first, and build up slowly.
First retinoid, or a bad past experience
Yes. Start at 2 to 3 nights a week.
Dry and mature skin
Yes, with a moisturiser underneath if needed.
Oily and acne-prone skin
Yes. If congestion is the main problem, Ultimate A+ adds glycolic acid.
Deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick V to VI)
Yes. Often the right first retinal on deeper skin, because irritation there can leave marks.
Wanting a stronger result after months
Step up to Ultimate A Gold.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, trying to conceive
No. Use Enlighten Gold or a plain moisturiser at night instead.
On prescription retinoids or isotretinoin
Ask your prescriber before adding any retinal.
Using it with what you already own
Repair + or B Quenched
Yes. For dry or reactive skin, moisturiser first, Ultimate A over the top.
Vitamin C
Yes, in the morning. Keep the retinal for night.
Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid
Yes. Both are already in the formula.
Gentle Glow (PHA)
Yes, on alternate nights at first. The PHA is the gentlest exfoliant to pair with a retinal.
Stronger acids and Smooth Serum
Introduce slowly, on separate nights at first, and stop if skin stings.
Other retinoids
Do not stack them. One vitamin A product at night.
After in-clinic treatments
Pause it for as long as your practitioner advises after a peel, microneedling or laser.

Questions we actually get asked

What is ESK Ultimate A?

A gentle retinal 0.06% night cream with niacinamide 4%, at pH 4.5 to 5.0, made for sensitive skin and people using vitamin A for the first time. It is used at night as the last step, so it replaces a separate night moisturiser.

What is retinal, and how is it different from retinol?

Both are forms of vitamin A that the skin converts into retinoic acid, the active form. Retinal (retinaldehyde) needs one conversion step; retinol needs two. ESK's view is that retinal works faster than retinol at a comparable level of tolerance. Our full guide: retinal vs retinol.

What does a retinal do for skin?

Vitamin A products are studied for the look of smoother texture, fine lines, brightness and a more even tone. They are a long game: months, not weeks.

Is it good for sensitive skin?

Yes. It is the ESK retinal made for sensitive, irritable and rosacea-prone skin: a lower strength, a barrier-supporting base and no essential oils. Patch test first if your skin reacts easily.

Which retinol is best for beginners?

A low-strength retinal with a supportive base, used 2 to 3 nights a week to start. That is what Ultimate A is designed to be. Strength can go up later; irritation on day one cannot be undone.

When should I start using a retinoid?

Whenever texture, fine lines or tone start to bother you, and your skin is not currently irritated, sunburnt or healing from a treatment. There is no age rule; there is a skin-state rule.

How do I use a retinal for the first time?

Start on 2 to 3 nights a week, on clean, dry skin, as the last step at night. Build to nightly over about a month if your skin stays comfortable. Use SPF every morning.

How often should I use it?

Nightly once your skin is used to it. Reactive skin can stay at every other night; steady use matters more than frequency.

How much should I use?

1 to 2 pumps for the face. More does not work faster and is more likely to irritate.

Retinal before or after moisturiser?

Ultimate A is the moisturiser, so it goes last. If your skin is dry or reactive, put a moisturiser on first and Ultimate A over it; the moisturiser slows the retinal down a little, which is the point.

How long does a retinal take to work?

Smoother-feeling skin in the first weeks; the look of fine lines and tone at 8 to 12 weeks; and it keeps building. Judge it at 12 weeks, not 2.

Will it make me purge or peel?

A little dryness while you build up is common. Peeling, stinging or redness that lasts means you built up too fast: hold at the current frequency until it settles, and message us if it does not.

Can I use it every night?

Yes, once your skin is used to it. Start at 2 to 3 nights a week and build.

Can I use it with niacinamide?

Yes. Niacinamide 4% is already in the formula.

Can I use hyaluronic acid with it?

Yes. It contains hyaluronic acid, and a hyaluronic serum underneath is fine for dry skin.

Can I use vitamin C with it?

Yes, on the same day: vitamin C in the morning, Ultimate A at night.

Can I use glycolic or salicylic acid with it?

Yes with care. Introduce acids on separate nights at first, and stop layering if skin stings. A salicylic cleanser is fine because it is rinsed off.

Can I use it with another retinoid or tretinoin?

No. One vitamin A product at night. If you are on prescription tretinoin, adapalene or isotretinoin, ask your prescriber before adding anything.

Can I use retinal in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

No. Do not use it in pregnancy, breastfeeding or when trying to conceive.

Is it suitable for rosacea?

ESK lists rosacea-prone skin among the skin types it suits. Start at 2 nights a week with a moisturiser underneath, and stop if it flares. Active rosacea is worth an assessment first.

Is it suitable for deeper skin tones?

Yes. It is suitable for all skin types, including deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick V to VI), and its gentleness makes it a good first retinal there, where irritation can leave marks.

Is it good for acne-prone skin?

Yes. It is non-comedogenic and ESK lists acne-prone skin. If congestion is your main concern, Ultimate A+ adds glycolic acid.

Does it help with dark marks?

Retinal and niacinamide both support the look of a more even tone over months. For marks as the main concern, see Enlighten Gold, which can be used over it at night.

Why is it yellow, and will it stain?

Retinal is naturally yellow and may transfer onto pillowcases or light fabrics. Let it absorb before contact and wash fabrics promptly.

Do I need SPF if I only use it at night?

Yes, every morning. Vitamin A products make daily sun protection essential.

What is the difference between Ultimate A, Ultimate A+ and Ultimate A Gold?

Ultimate A is retinal 0.06% with niacinamide, the gentlest. Ultimate A+ is retinal 0.1% with glycolic acid 2%, for oily and congested skin. Ultimate A Gold is retinal 0.1% with niacinamide, a PHA, 4-n-butylresorcinol, hyaluronic acid and ceramides, the most complete of the three.

When should I move up to Ultimate A Gold?

When you have used Ultimate A nightly for 2 to 3 months with no irritation and want more from the texture and tone work. Move up at 2 to 3 nights a week, as if starting again.

How should I store it?

It comes in an airless pump. Keep it closed, out of direct light and away from heat, and use it within the period on the pack once opened.

Does it contain fragrance?

No fragrance or essential oils appear in its ingredient list. It is free from parabens and sulphates.

How long does a bottle last?

The 50ml lasts around 3 to 4 months of nightly use, and longer while you build up. The 15ml travel size lasts around 3 to 4 weeks.

Is it cruelty free and vegan?

Yes. ESK states that Ultimate A is cruelty free and vegan.
